We rated our characters on a scale from weak to strong. I thought America was somewhere in the middle. I would definitely not consider her weak, but she isn't super strong either. She has times where she literally breaks down crying, and also times where she acts as if she is the queen already.
My group for the most part put her in the same area. Mostly in the middle, some slightly past it. We all had the same opinion. Even though I finished the first 3 books of the series, I can say that I definitely believe that America will get stronger as the books go on. Just in the Selection she had gotten a lot stronger since the beginning of the book. When she first went into the selection she wasn't the most social person, she did show her feelings for Maxon by yelling at him but that was the biggest thing she had done. Later on she actually was competing and knew she wanted to win. So yes, I think America will get stronger
