High- School Clique
My character America would be nerdy. America will turn in all of her assignments in on time. America will interact with students nicely and be kind to them but, if they are mean to her she is going to be mean to them back. This tells us that America can be nice to people but, can also be mean to people if they are mean to her. But, most of the time she is nice.
High-School Clique
America would probably have to big of a head to turn in her work on time. Even though she is kinda smart. There's to much draw in her life for her to concentrate. And I'm sure she would find that her social life comes before school. Defiantly scents she would be in the popular group. The only way she would ever turn something in on time. Is if all of her friends had the same homework and did it together. Witch could happen but probably not.
What High School clique is America in??
I personally think America would be in like a musicians clique. Since she already plays instruments and sings, she would fir perfectly in the musicians clique. Most people probably that its kinda "nerdy" to be in that kind of clique, but with America in that clique its nothing like that. I also feel like she'll be somewhat popular, but not that much.
Yes I think America would turn in her work on time, well most of the time. I feel like America likes learning about history and what's going on. So if it came up to history, she would always turn in her homework on time. Other than that I feel like she'll have some missing assignments here and there.

DONE WITH BOOK!!! HAVE READ OTHER ONES
America is somewhere in between being popular and being the kid no one likes. She is in the Selection so that makes her popular, but she has done some things where she made the whole place of Illea hate her. She has given risky speeches, talked to the prince in a horrible manner, and has fought against guards on live television. On the popular side of this she is Maxons favorite. Maxon is in love with her and that what makes her popular. She has the most popular guy on her side no matter what she does.
America would act polite, kind, but would not be afraid to speak her mind. She would be a good student and turn in all of her work and be able to come up with new ideas for projects. America would have straight A's and be always ready for anything. With Maxon by her side it would mean that other girls would hate her because they want Maxon so bad, but can't have him. Also since she has Maxon she would be loved by most teachers, unless she said something from her mind. Like how she wants to change everything.
America would be a great student, but would sometimes be out there and be shamed or get in trouble. America fall somewhere in between drama and school. She has both to deal with.

Disscusion Summary 5J
Today we talked about many things. One thing we talked about today was how America felt about all of the discussions America had with the prince. We said that she felt happy and sad at the same time. The reason we said she felt sad and happy is because they were talking about how their relationships in the past went, America was sad about Aspen and Maxon was sad about how he has never been able to have someone to love. She felt happy because they laughed and told jokes.
Today we also talked about far America liked living in the castle. We said that she felt happy to have all of the amazing things also she felt sad because she wished that she could be at home with her family. We also said that some of the people in the castle are nice but some are mean. We said that she felt happy whenever her family sent her letters and that she felt so happy that she got to send one back. We also talked about how she is glad that she has a good friend like Marlee and is happy for her to possible win the selection. We also talked about how the rebels sacred everyone and that America was sad about what happened to Lucy when one time the rebels came.

our discussion about our book
My group talked about how why Aspen became a guard at the place. Our answer was because he got sent to a class and he was the highest ranking student. I also asked if they think that Aspen and America will get back together at the end of the story. Our answer was no because, America might win the selection and she will be married to Maxon.

Dear America,
Maxon is so into you. You were the only person that he got one-on-one time with. You can tell that he likes you. I'm only saying this because he doesn't act the way he does around you, around other girls. You can tell the other girls are jealous.
I feel like this is an episode of the bachelor. He is only spending alone time with you to get to know you better. I think the only reason he didn't " eliminate" you is because he likes you. I think he really wants to win that bet with you so you guys wiuld get alone time. He knew that she wouldn't cry and so did you.
You were happy you lost wern't you? You knew that she might've cried but you were kind of hoping she didn't. You wanted to lose and you know it. Haha, I know you like maxon a little bit. I just don't get why you wont show it.
Sincerly,
Chloe Williams

If I had to talk to America
Dear America,
If I had to talk to you (America) I would say a lot of things. I would say things such as how can you not tell that the prince likes you. It is so obvious and you need to see that he really want to marry you. He is constantly flirting with you and Always wants to take you on dates and talk to you more than the other girls. C'mon girl! Date him!
Another thing I would talk to you about is why do you bottle up everything up instead of talking about it to someone? Maxon always wants to know how you're feeling and he wants to know about your past, let him love yaaaaa! Also some of the girls are trying to get to know you but you are constantly pushing them away, and the maids are trying to help you but you won't let them.
The last thing I would talk to you about is, do you really want to be in the selection? Like I know that you miss your family and I know that you don't like all of the royalty but aren't you kind of enjoying it? Getting treated like a princess, feeling loved by someone other than your family and well Aspen? Oh and you got to get over that boy, he broke your heart!

weak or strong?
In my lit circle group all three of us placed out character in the middle. This is because she was never mentally stable, and still isn't. But that never stopped her form physically acting. By the show of her actions towards Maxon.
I placed it in the middle because she is physically strong. But in the mental strait she is no were near strong. Defiantly with the whole Aspen thing and him being closer to her now. She is a mental wreck. For example she had a brake down near the middle of the book when she was talking to Maxon about her secret relationship with aspen and when he broke up with her, this shows her week side. Her physical strong side showed when she hit Maxon in the garden wall on a walk/date.

America, weak or strong
I put my character in the middle because, she can be strong at some points in the story. Then she can be weak at some points in the story. So I put her in the middle for her being weak and strong at the same time because, when she cries she doesn't want anyone to see so she dries it up and puts on a brave face.
All of my lit circle group had the same rating. None of my lit circle had a different opinion we all had the same.Yes, I think my character will move throughout the scale as I finish the book.

America, strong or weak??
I rated America around then middle of the chart. I put America in the middle because, mentally she isn't very strong but physically she's pretty strong. Prince Maxon should know how strong she is.. I feel like America is weak mentally because of everything she has gone through.
One of the other people in my lit circle put America more towards the stronger side, I mean, I can see why. The other person in my lit circle put he towards the middle, like I did. Overall I think she in more i the middle than towards weak or strong.
Since I know they're more books after The Selection, I think that America will become strong throughout the other books. I also feel like The Selection is going to have a dramatic ending, which might affect America, and she will learn from it.
Strong or Weak?
I'M DONE WITH BOOK! MAYBE A SPOILER!
America is strong but sometimes she can be weak and not be the strong person she can be. I would put her in the middle, but somewhere more towards the stronger side. America is in a spot where she has to choose Maxon or Aspen. She has been strong with this choosing but sometimes she breaks down and she becomes weak and gives into Aspen.
Most of our ratings were similar, but there was one where someone put her more to the strong side. I can see where she seems strong, but she does have times where she is weak and can't be strong. She can't always be strong. She has caved in sometimes to Aspen and thought about difficult things. America needs her times when she can be weak but she can not cave into Aspen.
As the series move on I think that America will stay the same. She will need to be strong if she wants to actually continue into The Selection, but I think that she will have to be weak sometimes and cave into some things. Hopefully she will stay away from Aspen though.

Is America Weak or Strong?
We rated our characters on a scale from weak to strong. I thought America was somewhere in the middle. I would definitely not consider her weak, but she isn't super strong either. She has times where she literally breaks down crying, and also times where she acts as if she is the queen already.
My group for the most part put her in the same area. Mostly in the middle, some slightly past it. We all had the same opinion. Even though I finished the first 3 books of the series, I can say that I definitely believe that America will get stronger as the books go on. Just in the Selection she had gotten a lot stronger since the beginning of the book. When she first went into the selection she wasn't the most social person, she did show her feelings for Maxon by yelling at him but that was the biggest thing she had done. Later on she actually was competing and knew she wanted to win. So yes, I think America will get stronger

Kiera Cass. CW
My author is Kiera Cass. She is 34 and was born on May 19th, 1981. She is from South Carolina. She currently lives in Blacksburg, Virgina. She graduated from Radford University. Her Husband is Callaway Cass.
Kieras first book was The Siren. Her newest book is The Favorite. She has 18 books. There is 6 books in the Selection series. I think that she wote the book because Kiera like princesses and royalty.

Research on my author
My author is Kiera Cass and she is 34 years old and lives in South Carolina. She was born May 19th and has 2 kids and a wonderful husband named Callaway. She also went to Radford University, plus she won and award for best young adult fantasy. Kiera's first book was called 'The Siren' plus she has wrote the trilogy series 'the selection' which I am currently reading.
I think she wrote the selection because from what I could tell by her previous book that she likes things that has to do with princesses and royalty so maybe that's why she wrote the selection series plus she looks like she would love fantasy books.

What Would You Say...
(chapter 16)
If I got to talk to my main character, I would tell her to stay at the palace. Even though she still misses Aspen. She needs to under stand that he has moved on and so dose she. I would also ask her if she Maxon. I would also tell her that she needs to use, the fact that she can basically do anything she wants and get a way with it to her own advantage. If I were her I would definitely take him up on the offer to the freedom of going out side when ever.
I would say all this to her because I believe that she is not as grateful as she should be for all the presence has given. And all the privileges she is getting. Because if any other girl did every thing she has done. They would be gone for good. I also put in the fact that there is no chance with Aspen because, even if she did get put out of the selection competition she would still be automatically a 3 instead of a 5. It was bad enough that she was on cast above Aspen, but now she would be 3 cast levels above him! This is my reasoning for why I would say what I said.
what i would say to my character
What I say to my character is are you exited to be in the selection? Also do u like prince Maxon if so why? Then I would ask how is the selection going? Also are you having fun here? Have you made any new friends? Next I would ask her why Aspen broke up with her?
Why I would say the is because, I want answers. Also I want to know these things. Also I want to know if the princes feelings for America will affected the selection.
Why I would say the is because, I want answers. Also I want to know these things. Also I want to know if the princes feelings for America will affected the selection.
What I would say to America (There may be spoilers)
America, you need to forget what Aspen has done to you and actually focus on The Selection a bit. Calm down and stay focused, even make some friends. Your family is fine and they're proud of how far you've come. Loosen up a bit, enjoy the FOOD. You don't need to worry about anything not even Aspen, don't think if he's "ok" or if he's happy. He doesn't matter as much anymore.
America, I also think that prince Maxon fancies you. I think the more you guys talk the more Maxon will take a notice that he likes you. You'll probably end up liking him to. One more thing, stop being so hard on the prince, he's letting you stay for the FOOD. Its also really nice that you're trying to help Maxon, but he probably likes you already.

What I Would Say to America Singer (Probably Spoiler in here)
America Singer get your little princess over here! How dare you let Celeste speak to you like that. You don't let something of that seriousness go. She literally injured you with her nails, that is against the rules! Get rid of her now when you can. She is going to make it to the top ten if you don't stop her now. You are technically a princess and royalty does not get treated like that. If she ever does anything like that again, you better tell someone!
Now there are some good things you did. I'm talking about how you told Maxon about everything. About Aspen, about the Caste System, and about how you really feel. By telling about the struggles of being below a 3, he did something about it to really help out his country. Which is what a real leader should do. He literally is giving people free food. Everyone one was taken aback by this but you should just be proud of what he did, and how you inspired him.

What Would I Say To My Main Character?
SPOILER ALERT
DON'T READ UNLESS DONE WITH BOOK!
What I would say to my main character right now is, what are you doing? You are falling in love with Maxon and you know it. You have liked him for awhile and you KISSED him! You also saw the man you have loves for two years. You like both people and you need to decide. You can't just keep playing them. They both like you and you know it. America you could have a life where you are in love with Aspen and you have kids, but you're starving and working everyday. Or you could be in love with Maxon and have kids, be full, have a wonderful life. You would be able to make people happy by showing even more to Maxon about the caste. You could change lives with Maxon.
I would say all this stuff to America so she could see what is right in front of her. So she could realize that this isn't a game. You are talking about life, love, relationships, and partnerships. She can't just keep two guys wrapped around her finger forever. Saying this stuff to America might make her realize that she needs to speed this process up. I know this is difficult and I don't want her to decide know or tomorrow, but she can't do this for months and even into years. It's just not right. She has to choose.

Conflict for The Selection
America is strugling having a man vs. himself conflict because she doesn't know if she should go but she wants to make her family happy. America is also strugling with havia a man vs. man conflict because her and her mom are fightng about going to the castle or not. Americas mom is strugling with man vs. man conflict because America and her are fighting and her mom wants her to go. The events that have complicated Americas man vs. man conflict is that her mom is making her go. The events that have complicated America man vs. himself conflict is that Aspen is wanting her to go which is making her even more sad.
The events that have complicated Americas mom man vs. man is America is fighting back which is making it even worse for her mom to send her away.I think that Americas man vs. man conflict will go further because they just keep fighting back and forth. I think that Americas man vs. himself conflict will go further for a little while but then stop because i think that she will start to like it over at the caslte.

Conflict
I think America (the main character) is struggling with Man Vs Himself. I think this because she doesn't want to go the selection but she's doing it to make her mom and her boyfriend Aspen happy. Also she doesn't like royalty, and she doesn't want to marry the prince but her family and Aspen is forcing her.
I also think she is struggling with Man Vs. Man because everyone is telling her what to do and what to be and she doesn't like it but she's doing it to make everyone happy. Also even though Aspen loves America, and he's willing to let her go just so she can be happy even though it is making her sad.

Conflict
Conflict
The main conflict of my book is Man vs society. The characters in my book are struggling with being apart from each other. Also leaving home and not being with there family. The event that have complicated the conflict even more is getting into fight like yelling with each other. Also ignoring one another not wanting to talk to each other. I think the characters with not solve the conflict between them without causing more harm.
Conflict
I honestly don't think that there is a way for America, the main character, can solve her problem without causing more harm. If she chooses to do something there is a chance that she will harm someone else's feelings, or maybe her own. Another conflict that I see coming with America is that, she really likes being herself and doesn't like wearing a lot of make up or dressing up. That can be a problem because in the selection when the people there are trying to prepare all the girls, they usually want them all to change the way they really look. America doesn't like that and maybe she can start something that might not go out very well.
Selection Conflict (Might be a spoiler so be careful)
First off the main conflict is man vs society. There is a very simple conflict that can be much deeper. It is that America has been put into a competition to be the next princess and she doesn't want to be. The much deeper part is that yes America has been put into a competition to be the next princess, but think of how the kingdom does this. They make girls look different and and act different just so they can be a princess. They don't care about true love for people. They just care about the prince having a princess.
What they do to the girls is the completely change their looks, personality and how they act. They can't be themselves. They have to act like they are perfect and that they are everything that they are not. This kingdom completely changes every girl that is in this competition expect for America.
Selection Conflict
The type of conflict happening in the story is man vs. society. The only reason America entered the Selection was for her family. And the only reason she is staying is for her family. Everything the "princesses to be" do it watched by society and judged by society. So it wouldn't be weird to say the conflict is man vs. society because everyone is trying to play up to people.
Now America in general, the only reason she is nervous is that her parents are watching and so is the rest of the world. She doesn't want to displease her mother. I mean her mom was the reason she entered in the first place. America is scared of people finding out her secrets.

First Discussion
My group and I talked about why America joined the selection. This is what we said "it mostly had to do with Aspen but also her mom". We Also talked about how old America. This is what we said "between 17 and 18". Then we also talked about who was going to win and this is what we said "we think it is going to be America".
The First Discussion
Today was the first day we had a discussion on the book and questions we had. Two of the questions that we talked the most on where , "Do you think that America will get to like Prince Maxon, maybe love Prince Maxon?" and "What was your first impression of Aspen, how about now?" For the first question we thought that yes America will like Maxon, and probably even warm up even more to him the longer she stays in the castle. I went further asking if she would love him more than Aspen, and immediately we all said no way. Our first impression of Aspen was that he was really great, I think he was all our favorite character. He was just such a lovable person. Later in the story, we regretted our decision to like him. He did something horrible that we could never forgive him for. Not going to say anything. Anyway, in the end we all really had the same opinion on the book and the characters.

( Chloe W) What Impression Of Your Main Character Do You Have So Far?
My main character in my book (Selection) is America. Her actions tell me about who she is by he and her mom exchanging dirty looks during dinner. Some of Americas likes are, 1. she likes Aspen. 2. She likes to got to her tree house at night. Some of Americas dislikes are, 1. the thought of being royalty. 2. Being someones princess. Some of Americas habits are, 1. crawling out her window at night.
I like my main character. One reason is because she is kind of like me. She doesn't want to be royalty or a princess. Another reason is that she is going to be a princess because of her family. Like she is doing is to helpp her family. She cares about other people and not just herself.I also like how she has her future planned out.

Impression of America (Taeja D.)
My characters name is America. What I have read so far tells me that she's not the girly type. She doesn't like Royalty, she doesn't like dressing up, and she likes singing. What I learned is that she doesn't want to go the selection and she's only doing for her mom and to make her mom happy. I like how her family doesn't have a lot of money so she is doing it to help out her family but what I dislike is how America never talks to her family unless it's at the dinner table
I really like this character. She's a lot like me in a way and I like how she's doing the selection for her family. She also cares about other people and not just herself and she has her future planned and thought out which is a good thing.

First Impression Of My Main Character
My main character name is America. Her actions tells me that she is not the girly girl type. Her family is not that rich .America is home schooled because, her family doesn't have enough money for a public school. America doesn't have many friends and she about 4 or 5 brothers and sisters.
What I have learned about America is that she doesn't like to be in composition or wearing dresses. America likes spending time with her friend Aspen. Her habits are hiding in her room. What I like about my character is that she is like me because, I like to hid in my room, I don't like wearing dresses (unless I have to),and I like spending time with my friends. What I don't like about my character is that she hardly ever spends time with her family unless it is dinner time.
first Impression of main character
The actions of America tell me that she is caring. Like when she told us that she some times goes out in the middle of the night with her diner to give to her guy friend that is a number 6. Where as the numbers are a way of showing how the cast system works. So a 6 is a servant who gets vary little to eat. She also talks about how she doesn't like to be labeled by numbers. And in this part it talks about how she thinks that everyone should be labeled and put to work for what there talent is not by what cast they were born in. She also talked about how she likes a guy that is in a lower cast then her but she would still like to marry him then going to the Selections, and having the chains of marrying the prince. This tells me that she is willing.
Americas habits tell us that she is vary debatable on her decisions and that she will argue for any thing unless the guy she likes tells her other wise. She doesn't like when her mom tells her what to do or what she would do. Defiantly when it comes to the Selections.
The only reason why I do like my main character because she gets in to arguments and is vary persistent with her opinion like me. And that she is not afraid to say her opinion. The only flaw is that she only did the Selections because her guy friend, Aspen told her to.

First impression of the main character
From what I've read so far in the book, America, the main character likes singing. America likes singing, she and her mother actually go out and do performances together for money. She also like wearing her lip-gloss, even though she's only suppose to wear it one special occasions. The only thing that she hate's the most is probably The Selection. She hate's that her mother wants her to be in it, and just the general Selection. I personally think that she doesn't want to be in it because, if she gets far enough to actually marry the prince she won't get chosen. On the other hand she does love someone else, so that can also be a problem. She also doesn't like the prince very much.
So far I do like the main character, America. I like her so far because, she actually thought of joining The Selection to help out her family. America is not just thinking about herself, she's thinking about her family and others. I also like that she helps other people and cares for them. She also has her future planned out for her which I think its great, but there's other things happening that might and will get in the way of her plans.

The Selection Main Character
Don't Read If Unless You Have Read Until Chapter 9
The main character in The Selection is America Singer. She is the oldest left in her family of children. She takes care of her younger siblings and does a lot of work for them. Since she is the oldest though she has to sign up for the selection of being the next princess. She has a lot to do that she doesn't want to do that includes having to end things with Aspen.
Aspen and America were amazing. They were in love and always snuck out to see each other. They were true lovers, until Aspen broke up with America. He broke up with America so she could have a chance of marring Prince Maxon and not have to be with her true love in caste 6, which is only 1 caste below America.
America then goes off to leave for The Selection to start but she ends up looking for Aspen in the crowd and sees him with another girl. He looks so happy and like he is having the time of his life. He looks like what he would look like with America. America sees this and gets mad and when she has time to say her goodbyes to everyone and Aspen wants a hug, but she completely ignores him and walks away. She should have been nicer and at least said goodbye one last time.
After this act America makes up for it and once she gets to the airport to wait for the other four girls she is competing with she does something that shows that she can be a humane person. She meets 2 other girls and talks to them for awhile, but then she meets Celeste. Celeste acts like a complete caste 1 which she is 2 but America stays nice to her even though Celeste acts so rude to everyone.
America also does something else that will warm your heart. She stays 20 minutes after when meeting everyone to say high to every person she can say hi to and talk to everyone. She acts so nice to everyone and makes sure that everyone gets to meet her.
American can be rude sometimes but she can also be one of the nicest people you will ever meet. You can love her and hate her at the same time.

America Singer: Why I Love and Hate Her!
DON'T READ UNLESS YOU'VE GOTTEN TO CHAPTER 7.
Our main character's name is America Singer. She is a Five who is in love with a Six, Aspen. Recently in our book, America was one of the 35 girls selected to go live with Prince Maxon. She was required to listen to a list of rules that she had to follow while in the castle. Everything was going fine until she heard the last rule. "When you are invited to do something with Prince Maxon, you do not refuse. No matter what it is. Dinner, outings, kisses-more than kisses-anything. Do not turn him down."
This is where she changes and I begin to relate to the girl. Like I would react, she was shocked. First she had to sign a form proving she was a virgin, and now she's not allowed to turn anything down from Prince Maxon. Ugh! I very much like America because of this because she reminds me of myself. A little shy but once you get to know me I go all out. Also I tend to over react sometimes, just like America. Though I try pretty hard not to show my emotions, but occasionally to let them go to someone close. For this reason and this reason only, I like America. I hope as we get further in the book I can relate even more to her.

Welcome!
Welcome to your Literature Circle's blog! You will be using this space to discuss and share your ideas with other Bode students reading your chosen book. Before we get started, here's a refresher on how we use our blogs at Bode!
When Posting...
- Reread your post for mistakes before you post it!
- Don't bother other peoples' posts! You are sharing this space. Don't open a post unless you are its author.
- Focus on your responses-- not fancy fonts, not cutesy pictures, not making people laugh. This is a space for you to dig into and discuss the text!
- Use images if you want, but don't use them if they are distracting. Any posts with distracting visuals will lose points when graded-- only use meaningful pictures.
- Don't spoil the book for anyone!
When responding...
- Don't be a jerk when you reply to a blog post. Correcting spelling and grammar is ALWAYS off-limits-- that's not your job! Your response should be positive and supportive of your peer's writing. If you don't agree with what they are posting, that's fine! Just make sure that when you express your opinion, you do it in a way that isn't mean or insulting. Your goal is to add to a conversation-- not to shut one down. Remember! If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!
- If something isn't clear or is left untouched in the original post, ask away! Comments are a great way to suggest new blog posts or to begin a conversation.
- Don't just say "I agree" and move on-- dig into the text! Use what you already know to spark a discussion!
- Don't spoil the book for anyone!
